So it wasn't *just* the hard drive. The motherboard is toast. Thankfully, my sweet and generous husband is letting me use his second laptop temporarily.
I cannibalized the machine last night, taking out the hard drives, optical drives and RAM... the rest is being chunked in the garbage. So long, old ...

Turns out the hard drive was bad. It died last night, despite a valliant week-long effort to survive. I'm picking up a new one after work, so hopefully tonight, I can be installed, restored, updated and ready to go. I have a ton of literally mission-critical work to get done ...
